A culture hero is a
mythological hero specific to some group (
cultural,
ethnic,
racial,
religious, etc.) who changes the world through
invention or
discovery. A typical culture hero might be credited as the discoverer of
fire, or
agriculture,
songs,
tradition and
religion, and is usually the most important legendary figure of a people, sometimes as the founder of its ruling
dynasty. The hero is sometimes said to be still living, but is often instead a star, constellation or purely spiritual in nature.

伝説的人物やある種の動物のことをいう。このような文化英雄は、そういった神話を持つ民族、部族の起源神話の中に登場し、民族、部族の始祖やトーテムとして位置づけられることが多い。神話に登場する文化英雄としてよく知られているのは、
ギリシャ神話の
プロメテウスである。彼は、
ゼウスの意志に逆らい、ゼウスを欺いて、火や穀物を人間にもたらす。その行いに怒ったゼウスは、彼をカウカソス山の山頂に張り付けにし、生きながらにして毎日
肝臓をハゲタカについばまれる責め苦を強いることにした、と神話のなかで描かれる。
