CRYSTAL is a quantum chemistry ab initio program, designed primarily for calculations on crystals (3 dimensions), slabs (2 dimensions) and polymers (1 dimension) using translational symmetry, but it can be used for single molecules. It is written by V.R. Saunders, R. Dovesi, C. Roetti, R. Orlando, C.M. Zicovich-Wilson, N.M. Harrison, K. Doll, B. Civalleri, I.J. Bush, Ph. D’Arco, and M. Llunell from Theoretical Chemistry Group at the University of Torino and the Computational Materials Science Group at the Daresbury Laboratory near Warrington in Cheshire, England. The current version is CRYSTAL06. Earlier versions were CRYSTAL92, CRYSTAL95, CRYSTAL98 and CRYSTAL03.

Cristal est un terme usuel pour désigner un solide aux formes régulières, bien que cet usage diffère quelque peu de la définition scientifique de ce mot. Selon l'Union Internationale de Cristallographie, tout solide dont le spectre de diffraction est essentiellement discret, est un cristal. Sur la base d'une propriété structurelle essentielle, cette définition englobe les cristaux classiques mais aussi une variété récemment établie qu'on a appelé quasi-cristal. Les propriétés empiriques des cristaux s'expliquent par deux facteurs : leur composition atomique et l'arrangement spatial des atomes.

Ein Kristall ist ein anisotroper, homogener Körper, der aus einer dreidimensional periodisch angeordneten Struktureinheit besteht. Man bezeichnet diese als Einheitszelle und dessen Anordnung als Kristallgitter. Festkörper ohne eine innere (Fern)Ordnung wie Glase werden amorph genannt. Daneben gibt es noch Quasikristalle, die zwar wohlgeordnet sind, jedoch keine dreidimensionale Translationssymmetrie besitzen und aus mehreren unterschiedlichen Struktureinheiten aufgebaut sein können. Je nach Ausprägung unterscheidet man Kristalle, in durch Grenzflächen geprägte Kristallite und unbeeinträchtigt ausgebildete Einkristalle. Anisotrope Flüssigkeiten, welche dadurch einige Charakteristika eines Kristalls aufweisen, bezeichnet man als Flüssigkristalle.

Ciało krystaliczne (kryształ) – rodzaj ciała stałego, w którym cząsteczki, atomy lub jony nie mają pełnej swobody przemieszczania się w objętości ciała, gdyż zajmują ściśle określone miejsca w sieci przestrzennej i mogą jedynie drgać w obrębie zajmowanych przez siebie miejsc. Kryształy to ciała jednorodne o prawidłowej, uporządkowanej, budowie wewnętrznej. Kryształ posiada symetrię translacyjną, która odróżnia go od ciał amorficznych  (ciał bezpostaciowych), np. szkła.

Un cristallo (dal greco κρύσταλλος, krýstallos, ghiaccio) è un oggetto solido costituito da atomi, molecole e/o ioni aventi una disposizione geometricamente regolare, che si ripete indefinitamente nelle tre dimensioni spaziali, detta reticolo cristallino o Reticolo di Bravais.In altre parole è una formazione minerale solida che ha una disposizione periodica e ordinata di atomi ai vertici di una struttura reticolare che si chiama reticolo cristallino; la presenza di tale organizzazione atomica conferisce al cristallo una forma geometrica definita. I cristalli si formano per solidificazione graduale di un liquido o per brinamento di un gas. Possono formarsi spontaneamente in natura o essere prodotti per cristallizzazione.
