Intensive Care Medicine or critical care medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the provision of life support or organ support systems in patients who are critically ill and who usually require intensive monitoring.Patients requiring intensive care usually require support for hemodynamic instability (hypertension/hypotension), airway or respiratory compromise (such as ventilator support), acute renal failure, potentially lethal cardiac dysrhythmias, and frequently the cumulative affects of multiple organ system failure. Patients admitted to the intensive care unit not requiring support for the above are usually admitted for intensive/invasive monitoring, such as the crucial hours after major surgery when deemed too unstable to transfer to a less intensively monitored unit.

La Réanimation est une discipline médicale qui s'attache à prendre en charge les patients présentant ou susceptibles de présenter une ou plusieurs défaillances viscérales aiguës mettant directement en jeu le pronostic vital. Elle implique un monitorage continu des fonctions vitales et, le cas échéant, le recours à des méthodes de suppléance (transfusion de dérivés sanguins, remplissage vasculaire, ventilation mécanique, catécholamines, hémodialyse, circulation extra-corporelle, etc.). L'objectif final de la réanimation est la restauration de l'homéostasie. On distingue la réanimation d'urgence telle qu'elle est pratiquée par les unités préhospitalières (pompiers, service mobile d'urgence et de réanimation) et la réanimation hospitalière médicale, chirurgicale ou polyvalente.

Intensieve zorg of intensive care (soms ook afgekort tot IC) is een onderdeel van de geneeskunde dat is gespecialiseerd in de behandeling van patiënten met levensbedreigende aandoeningen. Bij deze kritiek zieke patiënten zijn de zogenoemde vitale functies, die lichaamsfuncties dus die nodig zijn om in leven te blijven, bedreigd. In het algemeen zijn dat functies als de werking van het hart en de bloedsomloop en de longen maar soms ook die van nieren, lever en andere organen.
