cresol

Cresols are organic compounds which are methylphenols. They are a widely occurring natural and manufactured group of aromatic organic compounds which are categorized as phenols (sometimes called phenolics). Depending on the temperature, cresols can be solid or liquid because they have melting points not far from room temperature. Like other types of phenols, they are slowly oxidized by long exposure to air and the impurities often give cresols a yellowish to brownish red tint. Cresols have an odor characteristic to that of other simple phenols, reminiscent to some of a "medicine" smell.

Kresole (auch als Hydroxytoluole, Methylphenole bekannt) bilden eine Stoffgruppe aromatischer, einfach methylierter Phenole. Die drei Mitglieder dieser Gruppe unterscheiden sich in der Position der Methylgruppe am aromatischen Ring. Es sind Isomere, die alle die selbe Summenformel C7H8O haben. Darüber hinaus spricht man bei halogenierten Derivaten ebenfalls von Kresolen.

Krezol - (wzór sumaryczny: C7H8O, nazwa systematyczna: metylofenol lub hydroksytoluen) to fenolowy związek aromatyczny otrzymywany przez destylację smoły pogazowej, ropy naftowej lub syntetycznie. Jest on też obecny w dymie tytoniowym.Krezol posiada 3 izomery strukturalne: 2-metylofenol (orto), 3-metylofenol (meta) i 4-metylofenol (para), które posiadają podobne własności chemiczne, ale nieco inną temperaturę topnienia i wrzenia.Krezol otrzymywany ze smoły węglowej i ropy naftowej jest zwykle mieszaniną wszystkich trzech izomerów. Nieoczyszczony posiada barwę żółtą, natomiast czysty jest całkowicie bezbarwny. Posiada dość intensywny i nieprzyjemny, ostry zapach. Posiada działanie bakterio i grzybobójcze, a także posiada, podobnie jak naftalina własności insektobójcze. Czasami stosuje się go razem z naftaliną do środków na mole, znaczniej częściej jest jednak stosowany jako dodatek do płynów odkażających i środków czystości. Jego preparat jest nazywany lizolem, który jest często stosowany do odkażania pomieszczeń sanitarnych.

Met cresol (of ook hydroxytolueen en methylfenol) wordt op een mengsel geduid van drie aromatische verbindingen waarbij een benzeenring gesubstitueerd is met één hydroxyl- en één methylgroep: orthocresol, metacresol en paracresol. Deze drie stoffen zijn isomeren van elkaar. Cresol van technische kwaliteit zoals dat in de handel verkrijgbaar is heeft bij benadering de volgende samenstelling: Over het algemeen wordt van cresolen gesproken wanneer een verbinding een methyl en een hydroxy substituent bevat. Cresolen kunnen al bij lage concentratie waargenomen worden door hun karakteristieke geur.

Orthocresol is een grondstof voor allerlei producten zoals medicijnen en bestrijdingsmiddelen.Het is brandbaar en als het zich met lucht mengt boven de 81 °C zelfs explosief. Orthocresol is een kleurloze tot geelbruine stof, vloeibaar of in kristalvorm, die aan de geur is te herkennen. Het wordt verwarmd opgeslagen als vloeistof. Bij afkoeling gaat het stollen en vormt het kristallen.
