Die Mondsichel stellt astronomisch gesehen den zunehmenden (☽ – Unicode U+263D) oder abnehmenden Mond (☾ – Unicode U+263E) oder eine Mond- oder Sonnenfinsternis dar. Die Mondsichel (☾) und der Stern (★ – Unicode U+2605) wurden schon zu vorislamischen Zeiten als Symbol verwendet (siehe unten) und gelten heute allgemein als Symbol (☪) des Islam. Das Symbol ist auf den Flaggen einiger muslimischer und muslimischgeprägter Staaten zu sehen. Darüber hinaus ist es als Roter Halbmond ein Schutzzeichen nach den Genfer Abkommen und ein Symbol der Internationalen Rotkreuz- und Rothalbmond-Bewegung. Die entsprechenden nationalen Gesellschaften fast aller muslimischen Länder verwenden hinsichtlich ihres Symbols und Namens den Roten Halbmond (engl. ).
