A county is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes in certain modern nations. Its etymology derives from the Old French term, conté or cunté and could denote a jurisdiction in mainland Europe, under the sovereignty of a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, Gau, etc.) (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf).

Grafschaft
Eine Grafschaft war ursprünglich der Amtsbezirk, dem ein Graf als Richter vorstand; dann das reichsunmittelbare Besitztum und später die Standesherrschaft eines Grafen; auch Bezeichnung der Provinzen in Großbritannien (für England siehe Grafschaft (England)), der Republik Irland und Nordamerika (), wobei für die Vereinigten Staaten und die Republik Irland der Begriff Landkreis die bessere Übersetzung ist. Auch in Jamaika gibt es drei Grafschaften, die aber ohne Verwaltungsrelevanz sind.

Ett county (uttalas kâonti) är en administrativ enhet i Storbritannien, Irland, USA, Liberia, delar av Kanada och tidigare i Nya Zeeland, d v s i främst engelskspråkiga länder. I Australien är countyn fastighetsindelningsenheter. Det är en enhet på kommunnivå, men involverar två eller fler kommuner varav en har en någorlunda stor tätort. Det fungerar ungefär som ett svenskt eller finskt kommunalförbund där två eller flera kommuner har ett omfattande samarbete med gemensamt brandförsvar (och polis när dessa var kommunala), fritids- och kulturanläggningar, socialtjänst, sjukhus (Finland), skolverksamhet m.m. och kanske gemensam administration och myndighetsutövning på en rad områden.

Hrabstwo
Hrabstwo – w państwie Franków od czasów Merowingów terytorialna jednostka administracyjna podległa hrabiemu (łac. comes , franc. comte , niem Graf).
Początkowo hrabia sprawował władzę tylko militarną, jako lokalny dowódca i zwołujący pospolite ruszenie, później był także przedstawicielem króla lub cesarza w sprawach sądowych, skarbowych i administracyjnych. System podziału na hrabstwa przyjął się we wszyskich krajach podległych Świętemu Cesarstwu Rzymskiemu a także po podboju normandzkim w Anglii, Wielkiej Brytanii i innych krajach anglosaskich. Hrabstwa leżące na rubieżach cesarstwa pełniące szczególną rolę, zwłaszcza militarną, nazywane były marchiami, a ich zwierzchnik nosił tytuł margrabiego, t.j. hrabiego marchii, wyższy rangą od zwykłego hrabiego.
