Countertenor
A countertenor is an adult male who sings in an
alto,
mezzo or
soprano range, often through use of
falsetto, or sometimes natural
head voice. This term is used almost exclusively in the context of the
classical vocal tradition, although numerous popular artists have employed falsetto singing, for example
Brian Wilson,
Leo Sayer, the
Bee Gees,
Brian McKnight,
Stevie Wonder,
Justin Timberlake,
Jay Kay,
James Blunt,
Jermaine Stewart,
Art Garfunkel,
Chris Martin,
MIKA,
Roger Meddows-Taylor,
John Frusciante and
King Diamond. The countertenor voice went through a massive resurgence in popularity in the second half of the 20th century, partly caused by pioneers such as
Alfred Deller and by the increased popularity of
Baroque opera and also due to a need of male singers to replace the
castrati roles in
opera. Although they have been considered largely an
early music phenomenon, some modern countertenors explore a much larger repertoire.

Contreténor
Dans la
musique occidentale, et plus précisément, la
musique classique, un contreténor (ou contre-ténor) est le type de voix masculine utilisant généralement la technique de la voix de
fausset ou de tête (passant en voix de poitrine dans la tessiture grave à l'inverse de la haute contre française), et dont la
tessiture correspond à peu de chose près à celle de l'alto ou particulièrement en musique française à celle de la
haute-contre (ténor aigu qui chante en voix mixte), ou encore, à celle du
contralto féminin.

lat.: contratenor), auch: Altus (von lat. altus = „hoch, hell“) wird ein männlicher
Sänger bezeichnet, der mit Hilfe einer durch
Brustresonanz verstärkten
Kopfstimmen- bzw.
Falsett-Technik in
Alt- oder sogar
Sopran-
Lage singt.Es gibt Versuche, zwischen Countertenor und Altus zu unterscheiden (z. B. nach den eingesetzten Anteilen von Brust- und Kopfresonanz), aber die vorhandenen Sänger weisen eine derart hohe Individualität auf, dass eine solche Differenzierung fragwürdig erscheint. Die Bezeichnung „Altus“ bezieht sich eher auf die Lage, der Begriff „Countertenor“ auf die verwendete Technik.
