counterpoint

In music, counterpoint is the relationship between two or more voices that are independent in contour and rhythm, and interdependent in harmony. It has most commonly been identified in Western music, developing strongly in the Renaissance, and also dominant in much of the common practice period, especially in Baroque music. The term comes from the Latin punctum contra punctum ("note against note"). The adjectival form contrapuntal shows this Latin source more transparently.

Kontrapunkt (von lat. punctus contra punctum = „Note gegen Note“) ist ein musiktheoretischer Begriff mit mehrfacher Bedeutung. In seiner einfachsten Bedeutung steht er zunächst für „Gegenstimme“ und bezeichnet eine Tonfolge, die gleichzeitig mit einer gegebenen Melodie erklingt. So nennt man beispielsweise die Stimme, die in einer Fuge gleichzeitig mit dem Thema bzw. Soggetto erklingt, dessen Kontrapunkt. Davon ausgehend bezeichnet der Begriff Kontrapunkt auch die Kunst bzw. Technik, Gegenstimmen zu gegebenen Tonfolgen zu erfinden, die sowohl einen vertikal (harmonisch) sinnvollen Zusammenklang ergeben, als auch eine horizontal-lineare (melodisch) sinnvolle Eigenständigkeit aufweisen.

In musica, il contrappunto è la relazione tra due o più voci che sono indipendenti nel ritmo ed interdipendenti nell'armonia. Il contrappunto identifica la musica occidentale, si è sviluppato durante il Rinascimento ed è stato dominante nei periodi successivi, caratterizzando specialmente la musica barocca. Il termine deriva dal latino punctum contra punctum, ovvero nota contro nota (punctum è il termine in latino medievale equivalente al nostro termine "nota").
