Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or protect the appearance or odor of the human body. Cosmetics include skin-care creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail and toenail polishes, eye and facial makeup, permanent waves, hair colors, hair sprays and gels, deodorants, baby products, bath oils, bubble baths, bath salts, butters and many other types of products. Their use is widespread, especially among women in Western countries. A subset of cosmetics is called "make-up," which refers primarily to colored products intended to alter the user’s appearance. The manufacture of cosmetics is currently dominated by a small number of multinational corporations that originated in the early 20th century, but the distribution and sale of cosmetics is spread among a wide range of different businesses. The U.S. FDA which regulates cosmetics in the United States defines cosmetics as: "intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or functions." This broad definition includes, as well, any material intended for use as a component of a cosmetic product. The FDA specifically excludes soap from this particular category.

Der Ausdruck Kosmetik (vom altgriechischen Adjektiv  , aus dem Verb   „schmücken“) bezeichnet die Körper- und Schönheitspflege, bzw. die Erhaltung, Wiederherstellung oder gar Verbesserung der Schönheit des menschlichen Körpers.Bestimmte Substanzen, die Kosmetika, reinigen, stabilisieren, vitalisieren, deodorieren oder parfümieren die Haut, Nägel und Haare. Auch natürliche Methoden und Übungen wirken kosmetisch; zu den bekanntesten dürften Kneippgüsse und Saunieren gehören. Die Grenzen zur Hygiene oder Wellness-Kuren sind fließend. Kosmetik will das Körperäußere verschönern und pflegen und ist abhängig vom jeweiligen Kulturverständnis eines Volkes. Viele kosmetische Produkte zielen und zielten darauf ab, die Alterung und die Begrenztheit des Körpers weniger sichtbar zu machen. Im alten Ägypten der Pharaonenzeit wurde die Nekrokosmetik mit Balsamierungsverfahren entwickelt, um einen Leichnam noch lange vor dem Verfall zu bewahren. Viele Kosmetika der Neuzeit wollen auch das Altern aufhalten oder weniger sichtbar machen.

I cosmetici sono sostanze chimiche o naturali atte a curare e conservare la salute della pelle, capelli, unghie e in generale utilizzate per migliorare l'aspetto e l'odore di una persona.Il trucco è un cosmetico decorativo, utilizzato principalmente per risaltare la bellezza del corpo. Il loro uso è diffusissimo, specialmente tra le donne del mondo occidentale. Attraverso un insieme di operazioni il trucco tende a modificare l'aspetto del volto, e a volte dell'intero corpo, verso un canone di bellezza che distingue pregi e difetti. Nel caso dei difetti si coprono le asimmetrie e gli inestetismi, e nel caso dei pregi si marcano i tratti più gradevoli.
