Cortisol is a corticosteroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex (in the adrenal gland). It is a vital hormone that is often referred to as the "stress hormone" as it is involved in the response to stress. It increases blood pressure, blood sugar levels and has an immunosuppressive action. In pharmacology, the synthetic form of cortisol is referred to as hydrocortisone, and is used as an antagonist in the treatment of allergies and inflammation as well as substitute supplementation in cortisol production deficiencies. When first introduced as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, it was referred to as Compound E.

Cortisol, auch Hydrocortison (nicht zu verwechseln mit Cortison, der inaktivierten Form des Cortisol), ist ein Steroidhormon, das in der Zona fasciculata der Nebennierenrinde gebildet wird und zur Gruppe der Glucocorticoide gehört. Die Cortisolausschüttung wird durch Adrenocorticotropin (adrenocorticotropes Hormon, ACTH) aus dem Hypophysenvorderlappen stimuliert. Eine Überfunktion (Hypercortisolismus) führt zum klinischen Bild des Morbus Cushing, eine Unterfunktion (Hypocortisolismus) zum Morbus Addison. Kommt es zu einer angeborenen Störung der Enzyme die zur Bildung von Cortisol aus Progesteron benötigt werden beobachtet man ein androgenitales Syndrom.

Kortyzol, inaczej hydrokortyzon (ATC: H 02 AB 09, D 07 AA 02) – naturalny hormon steroidowy wytwarzany przez warstwę pasmowatą kory nadnerczy, główny przedstawiciel glikokortykosteroidów. Wywiera szeroki wpływ na metabolizm, bywa określany nazwą hormon stresowy.Powstaje z 11-β-deoksykortyzolu na skutek działania enzymu 11-β-hydroksylazy w warstwie pasmowatej kory. Kortyzol ma działanie przeciwzapalne, zatrzymuje też sól w organizmie. Największe stężenie we krwi występuje rano. Istnieje jego syntetyczny odpowiednik, jest to kortyzon, który w wątrobie ulega przetworzeniu w kortyzol.

Cortisol is een corticosteroïde; het is een hormoon dat gemaakt wordt in de bijnierschors uit cholesterol. Cortisol speelt een rol bij:vertering van voedselslaap-waakritmeafweersysteemCortisol wordt soms het stresshormoon genoemd omdat het vrijkomt bij elke vorm van stress, zowel fysiek als psychologisch. Het zorgt ervoor dat bepaalde eiwitten in spieren worden afgebroken waarbij glucose (energie) vrijkomt. Deze energie wordt gebruikt om het lichaam weer terug te brengen in homeostase; op het moment van stress komt adrenaline en noradrenaline vrij om het lichaam alerter te maken en klaar om te vechten/vluchten. Cortisol zorgt ervoor dat dit verlies van energie weer wordt gecompenseerd.
