Corrosion is the gradual destruction of material, usually metal, by chemical reaction with its environment. In the most common use of the word, this means electro-chemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen. Rusting, the formation of iron oxides, is a well-known example of electrochemical corrosion. This type of damage typically produces oxide(s) or salt(s) of the original metal. Corrosion can also occur in materials other than metals, such as ceramics or polymers, although in this context, the term degradation is more common.

Korrosion [] (von lat. corrodere, „zernagen“) allgemein ist die Reaktion eines Werkstoffs mit seiner Umgebung, die eine messbare Veränderung des Werkstoffs bewirkt und zu einer Beeinträchtigung der Funktion eines Bauteils oder Systems führen kann. Korrosion tritt an Metallen auf (DIN EN ISO 8044; ehemals DIN 50900), der Begriff ist jedoch ebenfalls gebräuchlich in anderen Gebieten, etwa der Geologie und der Medizin. Die wohl bekannteste Art von Korrosion ist das Rosten, also die Oxidierung von Metallen.

Metallen blir då till sin grundstruktur instabilare än ursprungsmineralen. Metallens inre krafter gör att metallen bryts ner till en stabilare förening, mer lik ursprungsmineralen.
