A corporation is created under the laws of a state as a separate legal entity that has privileges and liabilities that are distinct from those of its members. There are many different forms of corporations. Many corporations are established for business purposes but public bodies, charities and clubs are often corporations as well. Corporations take many forms including: statutory corporations, corporations sole, joint-stock companies and cooperatives. An important (but not universal) contemporary feature of a corporation is limited liability. If a corporation fails, shareholders may lose their investments, and employees may lose their jobs, but neither will be liable for debts to the corporation's creditors.

Das englische Wort Corporation entstand aus dem lateinischen Wort Corpus, für Körper. Eine Corporation ist eine Körperschaft, damit meint man eine Gemeinschaft von Personen (Gesellschaft) bzw. eine diese Personen vertretende Institution mit eigener Rechtspersönlichkeit (juristische Person).

Ein Unternehmen oder eine Unternehmung ist ein spezieller Betriebstyp in marktwirtschaftlichen Systemen. Konstitutive Merkmale des Unternehmens sind nach Erich Gutenberg das erwerbswirtschaftliche Prinzip (Streben nach Gewinnmaximierung), das Prinzip des Privateigentums und das Autonomieprinzip (Selbstbestimmung des Wirtschaftsplans). Öffentliche Betriebe und Verwaltungen sind innerhalb einer Marktwirtschaft das Pendant zu Unternehmen.  Körperschaften des Privatrechts (Vereine) stellen eine Mischform dar und unterliegen strengen Grenzen zu erwerbswirtschaftlichen Zielen. Die Struktur eines Unternehmens wird in den sogenannten Geschäftsplan aufgenommen. In Deutschland gibt es rund drei Millionen umsatzsteuerpflichtige Unternehmen. Etwa zwei Drittel davon sind Einzelunternehmen.

Au sens large, le terme entreprise s'utilise pour des projets uniques mais d'apparence risquée ou difficile (par exemple, un grand voyage ou une recherche scientifique), car il y a un effort entrepris dans l'activité.

Bateau de la marine française, l'Entreprise, était une frégate de 24 (armée de 24 canons) qui fut capturée en mai 1705 par le navire britannique Tryton. Elle est le premier navire à avoir été baptisée du nom "L'entreprise", une longue lignée suivra. L'historique de son service dans la marine française est malheureusement inconnu avant la date de sa capture. On pense qu'elle a probablement servi en mer Méditerranée.

Aktiebolag (förkortas AB på svenska) är en ursprungligen engelsk bolagsform som utmärks av att samtliga ägare saknar personligt ansvar för företagets förbindelser, att antalet delägare är obegränsat samt att det krävs ett signifikant insatskapital, så kallat aktiekapital. Korporacja - rodzaj organizacji (społecznej) zazwyczaj posiadającej osobowość prawną, której istotnym substratem są jej członkowie (korporanci). Członkostwo osób jest tym, co stanowi samą istotę korporacji, bez członków korporacja nie istnieje. Przy tym członkostwo musi mieć charakter względnie trwały i uregulowany wewnętrznym prawem danej korporacji (w tym znaczeniu korporacją nie jest np. zgromadzenie publiczne). Korporacja zazwyczaj zarządza sprawami swoich członków, w takim zakresie w jakim działają oni jako jej członkowie. Konkretne uprawnienia członków poszczególnych korporacji, a także ich struktury organizacyjne i zakres działania zależą już od określonych rozwiazań przyjętych przez ustawodawcę.
