Consul
Stillingen som consul (på dansk også stavet konsul) var det øverste embede i det gamle Roms republik. Consulerne var mest beskæftiget med lovgivningsarbejde, men ledede traditionelt også tropperne i republikken, når de drog i krig. De valgtes for ét år af gangen, med tiden med mulighed for genvalg. Under kejserdømmet fortsatte stillingen som consul, og blev i begyndelsen ofte beklædt af kejseren selv, men reduceredes snart til en ærestitel eller underordnet administrativ funktion.
