In modern astronomy, a constellation is an internationally defined area of the celestial sphere. These areas are grouped around asterisms, patterns formed by prominent stars within apparent proximity to one another on Earth's night sky.

Seit der Antike werden Sterne am Himmel in Gruppen von etwa 10 bis 30 zusammengefasst, denen eine mythologische Figur zugeordnet wird; eine solche Gruppe wird „Sternbild“ genannt.

Une constellation est un ensemble d'étoiles dont les projections sur la voûte céleste sont suffisamment proches pour qu'une civilisation les relie par des lignes imaginaires, traçant ainsi une figure sur la voûte céleste. Une constellation est donc un astérisme particulier. Dans l'espace tridimensionnel, les étoiles d'une constellation sont ordinairement très dispersées, mais elles paraissent être regroupées dans le ciel nocturne.

En stjärnbild eller konstellation är en folklig taxonomi av mönster av lysande stjärnor på himlen.
