A computer role-playing game (CRPG) is a broad video game genre originally developed for personal computers and other home computers. The earliest CRPGs were inspired by early role-playing games, particularly Dungeons & Dragons, and attempted to provide a similar play experience.Despite the vast spectrum of different features and game styles that exist in the CRPG genre, there are some common elements. Probably the most salient commonality is that of the avatar, with its quantized characteristics that evolve over the course of the game, and take the place of the gamer's own skill in determining game outcomes. Another common element in CRPGs is that they usually feature a well-developed fictional setting.

Ein Computer-Rollenspiel ist ein Genre aus dem Bereich der Computerspiele, welches seine Wurzeln hauptsächlich in den Pen-&-Paper-Rollenspiel sieht, von denen grundlegende Abläufe und Mechaniken übernommen werden. Der Hauptunterschied ist hierbei, dass die Rolle des vom traditionellen Rollenspiel bekannten Spielleiters vom Computer übernommen wird, und sich in deutlich engeren Bahnen bewegt, welche durch die Spielentwickler vorgegeben sind. Häufig wird das Computer-Rollenspiel mit dem Genre der Adventure-Spiele gleichgesetzt oder als Unterbegriff dessen bezeichnet.

Komputerowa gra fabularna (ang. computer Role Playing Game, w skrócie cRPG) - to rodzaj gry komputerowej, w której kierując grupą postaci lub pojedynczym bohaterem gracz wykonuje różne zadania (ang. quests) otrzymując w zamian przedmioty lub złoto oraz punkty doświadczenia wpływające na statystyki postaci, podobnie jak w tradycyjnych grach fabularnych. W ten sposób bohater/bohaterowie kierowani przez gracza stają się coraz potężniejsi - gotowi sprostać nowym, trudniejszym zadaniom.
