A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device. The word video in video game traditionally referred to a raster display device, but following popularization of the term "video game", it now implies any type of display device. The electronic systems used to play video games are known as platforms; examples of these are personal computers and video game consoles. These platforms range from large mainframe computers to small handheld devices. Specialized video games such as arcade games, while previously common, have gradually declined in use. Video games have gone on to become an art form and industry.

Ein Computerspiel (in der Umgangssprache teilweise als Game bezeichnet, vom englischen game für Spiel) ist ein interaktives Medium; ein Programm auf einem Computer, das einem oder mehreren Benutzern ermöglicht, ein durch implementierte Regeln beschriebenes Spiel zu spielen. Umgangssprachlich wird mit „Computerspiel“ in der Regel Spielesoftware für Personal Computer bezeichnet (PC-Spiele).

Un jeu vidéo, ou ludiciel, est un jeu utilisant un dispositif informatique. Le joueur utilise des périphériques pour agir sur le jeu et percevoir l’environnement virtuel.

Datorspel är den typ av spel som spelas med hjälp av en dator. Datorn, som kan vara en persondator, en spelkonsol, en mobiltelefon eller en spelautomat, tillsammans med kringutrustning och  operativsystem, kallas för spelets plattform. Några typer av datorspel indelade efter plattform är pc-spel, tv-spel, mobilspel och arkadspel.

TV-spel eller videospel är en typ av datorspel där en hårdvara (konsol) kopplas till en TV. Spelen i sig skiljer sig i teorin inte från PC-spel – många speltitlar ges ut till både persondatorer och spelkonsoler. De nuvarande moderna TV-spelskonsolerna är Wii från Nintendo, Xbox 360 från Microsoft och Playstation 3 från Sony Computer Entertainment.

Gra wideo to zasadniczo ta sama forma rozrywki, lecz odnosi się nie tylko do gier uruchamianych na komputerach osobistych, ale również na konsolach czy automatach arcade. Termin "gra komputerowa" zawiera w sobie również znaczenie gry, wyświetlającej jedynie tekst (przez co teoretycznie może być rozpoczęta nawet na dalekopisie) lub używają innych metod, jak na przykład dźwięku czy wibracji, jako głównego środka przekazu. Zazwyczaj w grach komputerowych określony jest cel i zasady gry, lecz w przypadku bardziej otwartych grach można decydować o tym, co robić w granicach danego wirtualnego świata.

Gra na komputery osobiste (częściej nazywana po prostu grą komputerową) to forma interaktywnej rozrywki stworzonej specjalnie na komputery osobiste.
