Complications of pregnancy are the symptoms and problems that are associated with pregnancy. There are both routine problems and serious, even potentially fatal problems. The routine problems are normal complications, and pose no significant danger to either the woman or the fetus. Serious problems can cause both maternal death and fetal death if untreated.

שמירת היריון היא מצב שבו אישה הרה מוגבלת בפעילותה במידה משמעותית, עקב סיכון רפואי לה או לעוברה, הנובע מההיריון. ההחלטה להגביל את פעילותה של האישה ההרה מתקבלת על ידי הרופא המטפל בה, ולה רמות אחדות של הגבלה:אשפוז האישה בבית חולים, לשם השגחה צמודה עליה.ריתוק האישה לביתה, כדי לצמצם את המאמץ המוטל עליה. צמצום מספר שעות העבודה של האישה, כדי להותיר לה זמן רב יותר למנוחה. על פי חוק הביטוח הלאומי, אישה הנעדרת מעבודתה מחמת שמירת היריון זכאית לגמלה מהמוסד לביטוח לאומי, שתהווה תחליף לשכר שאינו משולם לה. הזכות לגמלה מותנית בתנאים מסוימים, וכאשר לא מתקיימים תנאים אלה, זכאית האישה לדמי מחלה ממעבידה (סעיף 7(ג)(1) לחוק עבודת נשים).
