In mathematics, a complex number is a number of the form where a and b are real numbers, and i is the imaginary unit, with the property i ² = −1. The real number a is called the real part of the complex number, and the real number b is the imaginary part. Real numbers may be considered to be complex numbers with an imaginary part of zero; that is, the real number a is equivalent to the complex number a+0i.

Un nombre complexe est un objet mathématique servant à définir des solutions supplémentaires à certaines équations (normalement insolubles) et avec lequel s'étendent les quatre opérations usuelles des nombres réels. Les nombres complexes furent introduits au par les mathématiciens italiens Jérôme Cardan, Raphaël Bombelli, Nicolo Fontana, dit Tartaglia, et Ludovico Ferrari afin d'exprimer les solutions des équations du troisième degré en toute généralité par les formules de Cardan, en utilisant notamment des nombres de carré négatif, ainsi que les solutions des équations du quatrième degré (méthode de Ferrari).

Die komplexen Zahlen erweitern den Zahlenbereich der reellen Zahlen derart, dass auch Wurzeln negativer Zahlen berechnet werden können.Dies gelingt durch Einführung einer neuen Zahl als Lösung der Gleichung . Diese Zahl wird auch als imaginäre Einheit bezeichnet. In der Elektrotechnik wird als Symbol statt ein benutzt, um eine Verwechslung mit der Stromstärke zu vermeiden. Der Ursprung der Theorie der imaginären Zahlen, das heißt aller Zahlen, deren Quadrat eine negative reelle Zahl ist, geht auf die italienischen Mathematiker Gerolamo Cardano und Raffaele Bombelli bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurück. Die Einführung der imaginären Einheit als neue Zahl wird Leonhard Euler zugeschrieben.

Con l`espressione numero complesso si intende la somma di un numero reale e di un numero immaginario (cioe` un multiplo reale dell`unità immaginaria, indicata con la lettera i ). I numeri complessi sono usati in tutti i campi della matematica, in molti campi della fisica (e notoriamente in meccanica quantistica), nonché in ingegneria, specialmente in elettronica/telecomunicazioni o elettrotecnica, per la loro utilità nel rappresentare onde elettromagnetiche e correnti elettriche.
