Competence
Competence may refer to:
- Competence (biology), the ability of a cell to take up DNA
- Competence (geology), the resistance of a rock against either erosion or deformation
- Competence (human resources), a standardized requirement for an individual to properly perform a specific job
- Competence (law), the mental capacity of an individual to participate in legal proceedings
- Jurisdiction, the authority of a legal body to deal with and make pronouncements on legal matters and, by implication, to administer justice within a defined area of responsibility
- Linguistic competence, the ability to speak and understand language.
- Communicative competence, the ability to speak and understand language.

Kompetenz
Kompetenz (von lateinisch competere, „zusammentreffen“, „ausreichen“, „zu etwas fähig sein“, „zustehen“) steht für:
- Kompetenz (Psychologie), Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten allgemein
- Kompetenz (Pädagogik), Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten im pädagogischen Kontext
- Kompetenz (Sprachwissenschaft), das Sprachwissen im Gegensatz zum Sprachkönnen
- Kompetenz (Bakterien), die Fähigkeit von Zellen, außerhalb der Zelle vorliegende DNA aufzunehmen
- Kompetenz (Organisation), die mit einer bestimmten Stelle verbundenen Berechtigungen und Pflichten
- Zuständigkeit (Rechtswesen), rechtsrelevante Themen, die in die Agenden einer Behörde fallen

Competentie
Competentie kan betrekking hebben op:
- Een bepaalde combinatie van kennis, vaardigheden en houdingen die aansluit bij de eisen die aan een functie gesteld worden, zie competentie (vaardigheid)

- Het gemak waarmee een gesteente erodeert of juist resistent is tegen erosie, zie competentie (gesteente)
- Speelt ook een rol in het recht, namelijk welke rechter bevoegd is, zie absolute en relatieve competentie.
