commando

In military science, the term commando can refer to an individual, a military unit, or a raiding style of military operation. In some contexts, "commando" means elite light infantry or special forces. Commando units have a variety of specialist capabilities which enable them to conduct these kind of operations, most notable a broad range of deployment skills which often include parachuting, airborne rappelling or fast-roping, or amphibious landings.

Als Kommandos (von Afrikaans kommando; im englischen Sprachraum: commandos) bezeichnet man im Allgemeinen militärische Einheiten, die einen Sonderauftrag zu erfüllen haben. Daneben kann ein Kommando auch ein militärischer Befehl sein.Im  Zweiten Weltkrieg verwendete man den Begriff für Truppen, die oftmals für Operationen im feindlichen Hinterland eingesetzt wurden. Größere Berühmtheit erlangten dabei die alliierten Commandos für ihre oftmals spektakulären Operationen auf dem von den Achsenmächten besetzten europäischen Festland. Sie gelten als Vorgänger der modernen Spezialeinheiten.
