A command line interface or CLI is a method of interacting with an operating system or software using a command line interpreter. This command line interpreter may be a text terminal, terminal emulator, or remote shell client such as PuTTY.The concept of the CLI originated when teletype machines (TTY) were connected to computers in the 1950s, and offered results on demand, compared to 'batch' oriented mechanical punch card input technology. Dedicated text-based CRT terminals followed, with faster interaction and more information visible at one time, then graphical terminals enriched the visual display of information. Currently personal computers encapsulate both functions in software.

Une interface en ligne de commande est une interface homme-machine dans laquelle la communication entre l'utilisateur et l'ordinateur s'effectue en mode texte :l'utilisateur tape du texte au clavier pour demander à l'ordinateur d'effectuer diverses opérationsl'ordinateur affiche du texte correspondant au résultat de l'exécution des commandes demandées ou à des questions qu'un logiciel pose à l'utilisateur.

Wanneer een besturingssysteem de gebruiker een Command Line Interface (ook wel Opdrachtregelinterface of commandoregel) aanbiedt, wil dat zeggen dat de gebruiker het aanspreekt aan de hand van regels tekst die een of meerdere opdrachten bevatten. Nadat de opdracht is uitgevoerd krijgt de gebruiker weer de kans om het besturingssysteem aan te spreken door op de opdrachtregel een nieuwe opdracht op te geven.
