Colonisation or colonization occurs whenever any one or more species populates a new area. The term, which is derived from the Latin colere, "to inhabit, cultivate, frequent, practice, tend, guard, respect," originally related to humans. However, 19th century biogeographers borrowed the term to describe the activities of birds or bacteria, or plant species. Human colonisation is a narrower category than the related concept of colonialism, because whereas colonisation refers to the establishment of settler colonies, trading posts, and plantations with your own population, colonisalism deals with this and the ruling of existing overseas peoples.

La colonisation est un processus d'expansion et de domination politique, culturelle et économique (à différencier du colonialisme qui est une doctrine ou une idéologie) pratiquée par certains États sur d'autres Etats ou peuples alors obligés d'accepter des liens plus ou moins étroits de dépendance. Il s'agit d'un processus expansionniste d'occupation, qui consiste en l’établissement d’une ou plusieurs colonies par la mise sous influence étrangère d'autres territoires. Lorsqu'il y a domination politique du territoire et assujettissement de ses habitants, on parle alors d'impérialisme de la part du centre politique de décision appelé métropole.

Kolonisation oder Kolonisierung bedeutet die Gründung und Entwicklung von Kolonien (lat. colonia: Ansiedlung). Diese "Besiedlung" durch Kolonisten beziehungsweise Kolonisatoren findet sich in Terminologien zum Tier- und Pflanzenreich genauso wie in denjenigen zu menschlichen Gesellschaftssystemen.Kolonisation und die verwandten Begriffe haben in Bezug auf menschliche Gesellschaften ein weites Bedeutungsspektrum. Sie beziehen sich auf die Landnahme und die Besiedelung von Gebieten, sowie auf die Expansion einer Gesellschaft über ihren angestammten Lebensraum hinaus. Die Begriffe werden in Politik- und Geschichtswissenschaft sowohl für frühe Kulturen verwendet, als auch für neuzeitliche Entwicklungen. Die Kolonisation in der Neuzeit kann die Urbarmachung, Besiedelung und Entwicklung bisher ungenutzter Gebiete eines Staates bedeuten. In diesen Fällen wird auch von Binnenkolonisation (-kolonisierung) oder innerer Kolonisation gesprochen. Kolonisation kann aber auch expansive und aggressive Usurpation und anschließende Fremdherrschaft durch ein Volk aus einer anderen Kultur, durch eine fremde Staatsmacht, den Kolonialismus ansprechen.

Kolonisatie betekent oorspronkelijk: het vestigen van een deel van de eigen bevolking in een landstreek die nog niet door het eigen volk bewoond wordt. Dat kan in een onbewoond, onontgonnen gebied zijn, maar het kan ook een vestiging zijn in ‘vreemd’ gebied tussen de daar al aanwezige ‘vreemde’ bevolking. Het Latijnse colonia betekent nederzetting van boeren. Kolonisatie bestaat dus al zolang als de mens grond bebouwt.
