A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding or decoding a digital data stream or signal. The word codec is a portmanteau of "compressor-decompressor" or, more commonly, "coder-decoder". A codec (the program) should not be confused with a coding or compression format or standard – a format is a document (the standard), a way of storing data, while a codec is a program (an implementation) which can read or write such files. In practice, however, "codec" is sometimes used loosely to refer to formats.

Als Codec (Kunstwort aus engl. coder und decoder) bezeichnet man ein Verfahren, das Daten oder Signale digital kodiert und dekodiert, ein Programm das einen Codec implementiert nennt man eine Implementierung eines Codecs. Beim direkten Umwandeln von einem Format in ein anderes (bspw. MPEG-2 zu MPEG-4 oder MP3 zu WMA) spricht man auch von Transkodierung.

Le mot-valise codec vient de « compression-décompression » (ou « codage-décodage » - COde-DECode en anglais) et désigne un procédé capable de compresser ou de décompresser un signal, analogique ou numérique. Ce procédé peut exister sous forme matérielle ou logicielle.

Kodek jest skrótem od "koder/dekoder", co oznacza urządzenie lub program zdolny do przekształcania strumienia danych lub sygnału. Kodeki mogą zmienić strumień danych w formę zakodowaną (często w celu transmisji, składowania lub zaszyfrowania) lub odzyskać (odkodować) strumień danych z formy zakodowanej, by umożliwić ich odtwarzanie bądź obróbkę. Kodeki są często użyte w wideokonferencjach oraz strumieniowaniu obrazu lub dźwięku.
