Coal (IPA: ) is a fossil fuel formed in swamp ecosystems where plant remains were saved by water and mud from oxidization and biodegradation. Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black rock. It is a sedimentary rock, but the harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rocks because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. It is composed primarily of carbon along with assorted other elements, including sulfur. It is the largest single source of fuel for the generation of electricity world-wide, as well as one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered the primary cause of global warming. Coal is extracted from the ground by coal mining, either underground mining or open pit mining (surface mining).

Kohle (von altgerm. kolo = „Kohle“) ist ein schwarzes oder bräunlich-schwarzes, festes Sedimentgestein, das durch Carbonisierung von Pflanzenresten (Inkohlung) entstand und zu mehr als 50 Prozent des Gewichtes und mehr als 70 Prozent des Volumens aus Kohlenstoff besteht. Die Steinkohle wird auch "Schwarzes Gold" genannt.

Węgle kopalne - skały osadowe powstałe w wyniku gromadzenia się i późniejszego przeobrażenia szczątków roślinnych. Złożone są z szeregu związków organicznych, zawierają pierwiastki: węgiel, tlen, wodór, azot i siarkę oraz składniki mineralne: woda, kora drzewna. Mogą w nich występować także pewne ilości pierwiastków rzadkich, np. arsen, uran czy german.

Steenkool bestaat uit afzettingen van plantenresten die in het geologisch verleden (de West-Europese steenkool in het carboon), zijn gevormd na langdurig aan hoge druk en warmte zijn blootgesteld, waarbij tamelijk zuivere koolstof en vluchtige verbindingen ontstonden, waarvan de laatste weer grotendeels zijn ontsnapt. De transformatie verloopt met toenemende blootstelling aan druk en temperatuur van veen via bruinkool naar steenkool en antraciet uiteindelijk naar grafiet. Dat voor dit proces in principe geen lange tijd nodig is, is in diverse experimenten bewezen. Hierbij werd organisch materiaal aan sterke druk onderworpen waarbij zich binnen een paar dagen steenkool vormde.
