Clowns are comic performers stereotypically characterized by the grotesque image of the circus clown's colored wigs, stylistic makeup, outlandish costumes, unusually large footwear, and red nose, which evolved to project their actions to large audiences. Other less grotesque styles have also developed, including theatre, television, and film clowns. Peter Berger writes that "It seems plausible that folly and fools, like religion and magic, meet some deeply rooted needs in human society". For this reason, clowning is often considered an important part of training as a physical performance discipline, partly because tricky subject matter can be dealt with, but also because it requires a high level of risk and play in the performer.

En clown (eng. clowne, cloine, cloyne bonnig, klumpig person, tölp; inlån från tysk dialekt), pajas eller narr är en typ av komisk artist som använder metoder som mim och slapstick för att roa publiken. Clowner är kända från England på 1500-talet.

Klaun (ang. clown) – artysta komediowy występujący najczęściej w cyrku. Wyróżnia się przesadnym, kolorowym makijażem oraz strojem, którego charakterystyczne elementy to: groteskowo duże buty oraz luźne lub w inny sposób niedopasowane ubranie, sztuczny nos o dużych rozmiarach lub nietypowym kształcie. Skecze klaunów stanowią zwykle przerywnik głownego przedstawienia. Zawierają one najczęściej elementy slapstickowe i wymagające zdolności akrobatycznych. Najsłynniejszym clownem na świecie jest amerykański artysta "Clown Brown z Dzielnicy". Klaunami nazywa się również osoby zachowujące się zabawnie w swojej grupie społecznej, na przykład "klasowy klaun". Postać klauna wykorzystywana jest przez wiele fundacji do pomocy w leczeniu dzieci. Leczenie to znana terapia śmiechem. Terapia śmiechem i zabawą cieszy się uznaniem wśród pracowników służby zdrowia i rodziców, gdyż ma znaczący udział w procesie leczenia, rehabilitacji i rewalidacji. Środki na działalność fundacji pozyskuje się od sponsorów i darczyńców, zarówno prywatnych jak i instytucji publicznych.
