Classical conditioning (also Pavlovian conditioning or respondent conditioning) is a form of learning in which one stimulus, the conditioned stimulus or CS, comes to signal the occurrence of a second stimulus, the unconditioned stimulus or US. The US is usually a biologically significant stimulus such as food or pain that elicits a response from the start; this is called the unconditioned response or UR. The CS usually produces no particular response at first, but after conditioning it elicits the conditioned response or CR. Classical conditioning differs from operant or instrumental conditioning, in which behavior emitted by the organism is strengthened or weakened by its consequences (e.g. reward or punishment).

Klassische Konditionierung ist eine von dem russischen Physiologen Iwan Petrowitsch Pawlow begründete behavioristische Lerntheorie, die besagt, dass einem natürlichen, meist angeborenen, sogenannten unbedingten Reflex durch Lernen ein neuer, bedingter Reflex hinzugefügt werden kann: Gegeben sei ein unbedingter (auch: „unkonditionaler“) Reiz (engl.: unconditioned stimulus, abgekürzt US oder UCS), der als Reflex eine unbedingte (auch: „unkonditionale“) Reaktion (engl.: unconditioned reaction, abgekürzt UR oder UCR) auslöst. Bietet man nun im Zusammenhang mit dem US mehrfach einen bislang neutralen Reiz (NS) dar (Kopplung), so wird dieser zum bedingten Reiz (CS). Er löst nun ebenfalls eine Reflexreaktion (die bedingte Reaktion CR) aus, die der unbedingten Reaktion UR meist sehr ähnlich ist.

Cette théorie s'intéresse aux résultats d'un apprentissage dû à l'association entre des stimuli de l'environnement et les réactions automatiques de l'organisme. Cette notion de réaction non volontaire est le principal point qui la différencie du conditionnement opérant. Suite aux études de Pavlov, John Watson s'intéressa aussi à ce conditionnement. Il croyait que tous les comportements complexes étaient des chaînes de comportements conditionnés. L'apprentissage par conditionnement classique serait la base de nombreuses phobies.

Klassisk betingning (alternativt Pavlovsk betingning eller respondent betingning) är en typ av associativ inlärning, där en organism lär sig att koppla ihop ett stimulus med ett annat. Företeelsen har särskilt utforskats i behaviorismen.

Eksperymenty nad warunkowaniem przeprowadził jako pierwszy l. P. Pawłow. Stwierdził on, że podanie psu pokarmu do pyska wywołuje u niego wydzielanie śliny. Reakcję tę Pawłow nazwał odruchem lub reakcją bezwarunkową, ponieważ występuje ona bez uczenia się, w sposób niezmienny, utrwalony dziedzicznie; pokarm zaś jest bezwarunkowym bodźcem dla tej reakcji.
