Civilization (British English also civilisation) is a kind of human society or culture; specifically, a civilization is usually understood to be a complex society characterized by the practice of agriculture and settlement in cities. Compared with less complex cultures, members of a civilization are organized into a diverse division of labour and an intricate social hierarchy. The term civilization is often used as a synonym for culture in both popular and academic circles. Every human being participates in a culture, defined as "the arts, customs, habits... beliefs, values, behavior and material habits that constitute a people's way of life". Civilizations can be distinguished from other cultures by their high level of social complexity and organization, and by their diverse economic and cultural activities.

Le terme civilisation - dérivé indirectement du latin civis signifiant « citoyen » par l'intermédiaire de « civil » et « civiliser » - a été utilisé de différentes manières au cours de l'histoire. Il a en français trois grandes acceptions :la civilisation, dans l'acception la plus courante, est le fait de civiliser, c'est-à-dire de porter une société à un niveau considéré comme plus élevé et plus évolué, et c'est, par métonymie, l'état atteint par cette société évoluée. Cette acception inclut une notion de progrès. Elle s'oppose à barbarie, sauvagerie. la civilisation, c'est aussi l'ensemble des traits qui caractérisent l'état d'évolution d'une société donnée, tant sur le plan technique, intellectuel, politique que moral, sans porter de jugement de valeur. À ce titre, on peut parler de civilisations au pluriel et même de civilisations primitives.l'état auquel sont parvenues quelques cultures dans l'histoire de l'humanité. Cette acceptation est dans la lignée directe des théories évolutionnistes du , réfutées depuis au bénéfice de théories plus neutres.

Cywilizacja - poziom rozwoju społeczeństwa w danym okresie historycznym, który charakteryzuje się określonym poziomem kultury materialnej, stopniem opanowania środowiska naturalnego i nagromadzeniem instytucji społecznych. Il termine civiltà deriva dal latino civilitas, a sua volta derivato dall'aggettivo civilis, da civis ("cittadino"). In questo ambito indicava dunque l'insieme delle qualità e delle caratteristiche del membro di una comunità cittadina. A volte il termine veniva contrapposto a rusticitas, nel senso di buone maniere cittadine contrapposte alla rozzezza degli abitanti della campagna.
