A chromophore is the part of a molecule responsible for its color. The color arises when a molecule absorbs certain wavelengths of visible light and transmits or reflects others. The chromophore is a region in the molecule where the energy difference between two different molecular orbitals falls within the range of the visible spectrum. Visible light that hits the chromophore can thus be absorbed by exciting an electron from its ground state into an excited state.

Als Chromophor (griech. Farbträger) bezeichnet man den Teil eines Farbstoffs, der für das prinzipielle Vorhandensein der Farbigkeit sorgt.

Un chromophore désigne une molécule colorée. Plus précisément, ce terme désigne le groupement d'atomes au sein de cette molécule qui est responsable de sa couleur. Cette propriété optique résulte d'une capacité à absorber l'énergie de photons dans une gamme du spectre visible tandis que les autres longueurs d'onde sont transmises ou diffusées. Par exemple, le carotène est le chromophore qui donne leur couleur à de nombreux fruits (comme les carottes), cette molécule absorbe en effet les longueurs d'onde dans la gamme bleue du spectre visible mais réfléchit la couleur complémentaire (orange et rouge). Un produit contenant du carotène nous apparaît donc orange ou rouge.

Хромофо́ры ( — цвет и foreo — несу) — ненасыщенные группы атомов, вызывающие появление окраски. Хромофорная теория возникновения окраски была предложена в 1878г. немецким ученым Виттом. К хромофорам относят азогруппу —N=N—, нитрогруппу —NO₂, нитрозогруппу —N=O, карбонильную группу =С=О и др. Введение других групп, называемых ауксохромами (от греч. auxo — увеличиваю) (—ОН, —NH₂ и др.), способствует углублению окраски.
