Cholesterol, from the Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid) followed by the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, is an organic chemical substance classified as a waxy steroid of fat. It is an essential structural component of mammalian cell membranes and is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity.

Das Cholesterin (auch Cholesterol) ist ein in allen tierischen Zellen vorkommender Naturstoff. Der Name leitet sich vom griechischen chole ‚Galle‘ und stereos ‚fest‘ ab, da es – bereits im 18. Jahrhundert – in Gallensteinen gefunden wurde.

Le cholestérol est un lipide de la famille des stérols qui joue un rôle central dans de nombreux processus biochimiques. Le cholestérol tire son nom du grec ancien chole- (bile) et de stereos (solide), car il fut découvert sous forme solide dans les calculs biliaires en 1769 par François Poulletier de la Salle. Mais ce n'est qu'en 1815 que le chimiste français Eugène Chevreul lui donna le nom de cholestérine.

Kolesterol är en lipid, ett fettaktigt ämne som är en viktig byggsten i de cellmembran som utgör varje cells yttre skal, och som även finns i organeller inuti varje cell. Rent kemiskt är kolesterol även en steroid och en alkohol. Namnet kommer från grekiskans chole som betyder galla och stereos, fast; när man först identifierade ämnet var det i fast form i gallstenar. Det kemiska suffixet  -ol står för att ämnet är en alkohol.

Jego pochodne występują w błonie każdej komórki zwierzęcej, działając na nią stabilizująco i decydując o wielu jej własnościach. Jest także prekursorem licznych ważnych steroidów takich jak kwasy żółciowe czy hormony steroidowe.
