Chlorophyll (also chlorophyl) is a green pigment found in almost all plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Its name is derived from the Greek words χλωρος, chloros ("green") and φύλλον, phyllon ("leaf"). Chlorophyll is an extremely important biomolecule, critical in photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light. Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, followed by the red portion. However, it is a poor absorber of green and near-green portions of the spectrum, hence the green color of chlorophyll-containing tissues. Chlorophyll was first isolated by Joseph Bienaimé Caventou and Pierre Joseph Pelletier in 1817.

Das Chlorophyll (von griechisch χλωρός, chlōrós – hellgrün, frisch und φύλλον, phýllon – Blatt) oder Blattgrün bezeichnet eine Klasse natürlicher Farbstoffe, die von Organismen gebildet werden, die Photosynthese betreiben. Insbesondere Pflanzen erlangen ihre grüne Farbe durch Chlorophyllmoleküle.

La chlorophylle (mot composé en 1817 à partir des racines grecques  : vert et phýllon : feuille) est le principal pigment assimilateur des végétaux supérieurs.

Klorofyll är det ämne som ger växter deras gröna färg. Ämnet spelar en avgörande roll i fotosyntesen, det vill säga växternas omvandling av koldioxid, vatten och energi till kolhydrater och syrgas.

Chlorofil - barwnik obecny w roślinach zielonych, algach (glonach) i bakteriach fotosyntetycznych (w tym: sinice), którego zadaniem jest generowanie pod wpływem światła widzialnego wolnych elektronów, które są następnie spożytkowane w dalszych etapach fotosyntezy. Zielony kolor chlorofilu spowodowany jest bardzo niską absorpcją w "zielonej" części spektrum światła (500-600 nm).
