Chivalry, or the chivalric code, is the traditional code of conduct associated with the medieval institution of knighthood. It was originally conceived of as an aristocratic warrior code — the term derives from the French term for horseman — involving individual training and service to others. Over time its meaning has been refined to emphasize more ideals such as knightly virtues, honour and courtly love, and less the martial aspects of the tradition.

Ritterlichkeit umfasst einen Katalog von tugendhaftem Verhalten oder bestimmter Tugenden; manchmal sogar einen Ethos. Es stammt vom mittelhochdeutschen Adjektiv bzw. Adverb rîtterlich oder rîterlich, das Nomen Ritterlichkeit ist also späteren Ursprungs. Dort bezeichnet es das einem Ritter geziemende Verhalten .

La chevalerie est le terme qui désigne l'institution féodale des chevaliers et les valeurs qui lui sont associées, ou lui sont devenus associées par le biais de la littérature, notamment la prouesse (le courage), la loyauté (l'honneur), la largesse (générosité) et la notion d'amour courtois.

Se entiende por caballería' a la unidad militar que combate montada a caballo. Este término proviene del francés cavalerie. La designación generalmente no se empleaba para fuerzas militares que usasen otros animales, como camellos o mulas.
