Chiropractic (from Greek chiros and praktikos meaning "done by hand") is a health care profession whose purpose is to diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system  with the intention of affecting the nervous system and improving health. It is based on the premise that a spinal joint dysfunction can interfere with the nervous system and result in many different conditions of diminished health. While some chiropractors use the term vertebral subluxation to describe what they treat, others have dropped this concept and concentrate mostly on the musculoskeletal components of spinal injury and rehabilitation of the spine. In contrast, the term subluxation as used in conventional medicine is usually associated with specific conditions which are a direct consequence of injury to joints or associated nerves.

La chiropratique (prononcer kiro-pratique), du grec kheir, main et praktikos est une discipline de médecine non conventionnelle qui consiste en la prévention, le diagnostic et le traitement des affections mécaniques de l’appareil neuro-musculo-squelettique en particulier du rachis et de leurs conséquences. Chiropractie (ook: chiropraxie) is een manuele behandelmethode voor gewrichts- en andere gezondheidsproblemen. Deze in 1892 in de Verenigde Staten ontwikkelde methode geniet nu bekendheid over de gehele wereld. Een beoefenaar van chiropractie wordt chiropractor genoemd. Het woord 'chiropractie' is afgeleid van het Griekse woord 'cheir' (hand) en 'prattein' (beoefenen). Het betekent dus: met de hand beoefenen. (ook genoemd: manueel; van het latijn manus = hand).

Kiropraktik är en alternativmedicinsk inriktning vilken anser att man kan stimulera kroppen till självläkning för att förbättra hälsotillståndet hos patienten. Den är tämligen etablerad inom den västerländska vården och arbetar parallellt eller integrerat med denna i många länder. Kiropraktiken ingår numera i Världshälsoorganisationens organ för medicinsk vetenskap, CIOMS. För att få detta erkännande krävs det att yrkeskåren uppvisar hög säkerhet och vetenskapligt dokumenterad behandlingseffekt. Kritik har dock framförts med argumenten att det saknas vetenskapligt stöd och välgjorda studier för metoden.
