儿童文学的定义，是指以儿童为阅读对象的文学作品。这和“有关儿童的文学”有所不同，尽管两者很多时都一样。儿童文学在世上已有很长久的历史，尽管最初的儿童文学并非休闲读物，早期許多兒童文學由成人作品改編，但若不適合孩子或未針對兒童而改編，不能算作兒童文學的作品。
