Chess is a recreational and competitive game for two players. Sometimes called Western Chess or International Chess to distinguish it from its predecessors and other chess variants, the current form of the game emerged in Southern Europe in the second half of the 15th century after evolving from similar, much older games of Persian origin. Today, chess is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide in clubs, online, by correspondence, in tournaments and informally. Aspects of art and science are found in chess composition and theory. Chess is also advocated as a way of enhancing mental prowess.

When annotating chess games, commentators frequently use question marks and exclamation points to denote a move as bad or good. The symbols normally used are "??", "?", "?!", "!?", "!", and "!!". The corresponding symbol is juxtaposed in the text immediately after the move (e.g. Re7? or Kh1!?, see algebraic chess notation). Use of these annotation symbols is always somewhat subjective, and different annotators will often wind up using the same symbols differently.

Au jeu d'échecs, les annotations symboliques sont fréquemment utilisées par les commentateurs pour indiquer qu'un coup est bon ou mauvais, indiquer qu'un des deux camps a un avantage, dispose de l'initiative, etc. Ces annotations suivent immédiatement les coups qu'elles commentent. Par exemple Te7?? signifie que le coup Te7 est très mauvais, tandis que De7= signifie que la position est égale après le coup De7. Voir aussi notation algébrique.

Chess (englisch für Schach) ist ein Musical aus dem Jahr 1984.Die Musik dazu wurde von den Männern der schwedischen Popgruppe ABBA, Benny Andersson und Björn Ulvaeus, verfasst, die Texte stammen vom Briten Tim Rice. Die bekanntesten Lieder aus dem Musical sind One Night In Bangkok und I Know Him So Well.Das Musical wurde zunächst einige Male konzertant aufgeführt, dann von Trevor Nunn im Prince Edward Theatre im Londoner West End mehrere Jahre lang aufgeführt.

Schach (von persisch: Schah, für „König“ – daher die stehende  Metapher: „das königliche Spiel“) ist ein strategisches Brettspiel, bei dem zwei Spieler abwechselnd Spielfiguren auf einem Spielbrett bewegen. Ziel des Spiels ist es, die als König bezeichnete Spielfigur des gegnerischen Spielers so anzugreifen, dass diesem keine Abwehr durch das Schlagen (Entfernen) der angreifenden Figur, durch das Schützen des Königs mit Hilfe einer eigenen Figur oder durch das Ausweichen des Königs auf ein nicht angegriffenes Feld mehr möglich ist. Eine solche Stellung wird Schachmatt genannt (vom Arabischen aš-šah mata = der Schah ist gestorben) und bedeutet das Ende des Spiels mit dem Sieg des mattsetzenden Spielers. Dabei ist das spielerische Können der Kontrahenten maßgeblich entscheidend und nicht der Zufall.

Il numero di posizioni legalmente ammesse è stimato essere fra e e "l'albero di complessità del gioco" è approssimativamente di , mentre ad ogni mossa le possibilità variano da 0 (in caso di stallo o di scacco matto) a 218. Si gioca a scacchi sia a scopo ricreativo che competitivo. Si può dunque giocare a casa o nei Club di Scacchi, in tornei, on-line, o per corrispondenza.
