Chemotherapy is the use of chemical substances to treat disease. In its modern-day use, it refers to cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancer or the combination of these drugs into a standardized treatment regimen.In its non-oncological use, the term may also refer to antibiotics (antibacterial chemotherapy). In that sense, the first modern chemotherapeutic agent was Paul Ehrlich's arsphenamine, an arsenic compound discovered in 1909 and used to treat syphilis. This was later followed by sulfonamides discovered by Domagk and penicillin discovered by Alexander Fleming.

La chimiothérapie est l'usage de certaines substances chimiques pour traiter une maladie. C'est une technique de traitement à part entière au même titre que la chirurgie. La première utilisation connue de la chimiothérapie remonte à l'usage de l'écorce de quina par les Indiens du Pérou, dans le traitement de fièvres telles que la malaria.

Unter Chemotherapie wird umgangssprachlich die Behandlung von Krebs mit Medikamenten verstanden. Mediziner unterscheiden die antineoplastische Chemotherapie (Krebsbehandlung) von der antimikrobiellen Chemotherapie (Behandlung von Infektionskrankheiten).Der Begriff wurde 1906 von Paul Ehrlich geprägt. Er beschrieb damit die Behandlung von Infektionskrankheiten mit Methoden, die direkt gegen den Krankheitserreger vorgehen. Ehrlich begann mit seinen Versuchen am 31. August 1909 in Frankfurt am Main, indem er Erreger der Syphilis in Ratten injizierte und anschließend mit Hilfe chemotherapeutischer Verfahren heilte. Diese Versuche hatten eine so überzeugende Wirkung, dass man hierin die neue „Waffe“ der Medizin gegen Infektionskrankheiten sah. Die verwendeten Medikamente werden entweder künstlich hergestellt oder sind Abkömmlinge von in der Natur vorkommenden Stoffen.

Chemioterapia jest to metoda systemowego leczenia nowotworów złośliwych za pomocą leków cytostatycznych. Dziedziną medycyny zajmującą się chemoterapią nowotworów jest onkologia kliniczna podstawowa specjalizacja, tzn. specjalizacja, którą wybiera się po ukończeniu studiów. W szerszym znaczeniu jest to używanie syntetycznych związków chemicznych w leczeniu chorób. W leczeniu nowotworów stosuje się także leki hormonalne, leki celowane molekularnie (np. erlotynib, imatinib) i przeciwciała monoklonalne.

La chemioterapia è definita come l'uso di composti chimici per distruggere selettivamente parassiti od organismi invasori senza intaccare le funzioni vitali dell'ospite (nei limiti del possibile). Nel corso degli anni, la diffusione delle patologie tumorali fino a livelli endemici ha fatto riconsiderare tale definizione, che attualmente include negli "organismi invasori" anche le cellule che sono andate incontro a degenerazione tumorale; nel linguaggio comune, la parola chemioterapia indica erroneamente solo questo campo di applicazione. In realtà, per gli addetti ai lavori sono farmaci chemioterapici anche antibiotici, antivirali, antiprotozooari, antimicotici ed altri ancora. Il termine chemioterapia è stato coniato all'inizio del secolo scorso per descrivere l'uso di sostanze sintetiche allo scopo di distruggere gli agenti eziologici delle malattie infettive.
