Mail (also maille, often given as chain mail or chain maille) is a type of armour or jewelry that consists of small metal rings linked together in a pattern to form a mesh. Mail armour provided a highly effective defense against the weapons of the era. Tests conducted by the Royal Amoury at Leeds concluded that, "it is almost impossible to penetrate using any conventional medieval weapon." This construction can ward off a slashing blow by an edged weapon, preventing it from cutting through to the skin. The flexibility of mail meant that a particularly strong blow would often transfer to the user, often causing fractures or serious bruising. It is to be considered however, that most Medieval physicians or physicians of earlier time periods could usually set broken bones, but when it came to preventing infection they were woefully inadequate. Thus the mail was weak in defending against wounds which could be more easily mended but strong against those to which the soldier was most vulnerable. The word chainmail is of relatively recent coinage, having been in use only since the 1700s, prior to this it was referred to simply as mail [1].

Une cotte de mailles est un vêtement (cotte = chemise longue) constitué de mailles (maille ou macle : pièce rigide généralement métallique) reliées entre elles afin de former une protection individuelle corporelle. Sa particularité vient du fait que les mailles sont reliées entre elles et non pas fixées à un vêtement servant de support (broigne), et qu’elle conserve un minimum de souplesse.

Chainmail (Kettenpanzer) war als Rollenspiel der Vorgänger von Dungeons & Dragons und erschien 1971 zuerst bei Guidon Games, später bei TSR. Erdacht wurde es von Jeff Perren und Gary Gygax. Die erste 1971 produzierte Edition gilt als eine der ältesten und ersten Regelwerke für Fantasykämpfe.Obwohl es vornehmlich ein Regelsystem für Kämpfe mit Miniaturen war, schaffte sein Fantasy Supplement Rollenspiel als neue Form des Gesellschaftsspiels.

Als Kettenrüstung oder Kettenpanzer (Ringelpanzer oder Panzerhemd; lat. Lorica hamata) bezeichnet man eine Rüstung, die aus zahlreichen ineinander verflochtenen und oft auch vernieteten kleinen Metallringen aus Draht besteht. (vergleiche auch Brünne)

Kolczuga – zwana inaczej pancerzem kolczym. Jest to  zbroja, która według jednych źródeł historycznych została wynaleziona przez Celtów ok. V w. p.n.e., inne źródła przyjmują, iż pochodzi ze Wschodu. Niewykluczone jest, że powstała niezależnie w obu tych miejscach.Kolczuga ma postać koszulki kolczej z rękawami, czasem z kapturem oraz spodenkami kolczymi. Zbudowana jest z kilkunastu tysięcy małych kółek żelaznych o średnicy 5-15 mm, które są splatane w taki sposób, aby łączyć się z kilkoma sąsiednimi. Dla wykonania poszczególnych ogniw nawijano żelazny drut na pierścień, zaś końce rozpłaszczano i nitowano lub łączono na gorąco. Generalnie w różnych epokach stosowano nieco zmodyfikowane sposoby wyrobu kolczug.

Chainmail è un wargame tridimensionale (giocato cioè con miniature) creato da Gary Gygax e Jeff Perren. L'edizione del 1971 comprendeva un supplemento fantasy, uno dei set di regole più antichi per il wargame tridimensionale fantasy, e comprendeva incantesimi e mostri che sarebbero riapparsi nel gioco di ruolo Dungeons & Dragons.
