The word ceramic is derived from the Greek word κεραμικός (keramikos). The term covers inorganic non-metallic materials which are formed by the action of heat. Up until the 1950s or so, the most important of these were the traditional clays, made into pottery, bricks, tiles and are like, along with cements and glass. Clay based ceramics are described in the article on pottery. A composite material of ceramic and metal is known as cermet. The word ceramic can be an adjective, and can also be used as a noun to refer to a ceramic material, or a product of ceramic manufacture. Ceramics is a singular noun referring to the art of making things out of ceramic materials. The technology of manufacturing and usage of ceramic materials is part of the field of ceramic engineering.

Die Bezeichnung Keramik stammt aus dem Altgriechischen. „Keramos“ war die Bezeichnung für Ton und die aus ihm durch Brennen hergestellten formbeständigen Erzeugnisse. Die Produktion von Keramik gehört zu den ältesten Kulturtechniken der Menschheit. Ihre älteste Nutzung scheint bei semi-sesshaften Jägerkulturen im Gebiet des oberen Nil erfolgt zu sein. Ihre enorme Verbreitung verdankt sie aber ursprünglich den erweiterten Möglichkeiten zur Aufbewahrung (Vorratshaltung) von Nahrung wie sie mit dem Neolithikum erforderlich wurde. Keramik spielt eine wesentliche Rolle im Rahmen der Determination neolithischer Kulturen. Das Ausgangsmaterial Ton bot jedoch schon sehr früh auch Anreize zu künstlerischer Gestaltung. Seit vielen Jahrzehnten hat Keramik in technischen Anwendungen große Bedeutung erlangt.

Ceramika w rozumieniu tradycyjnym są to tworzywa/wyroby otrzymywane w wyniku wypalenia odpowiednio uformowanej gliny. Nazwa tych wyrobów wywodzi się z greckiego wyrażenia κεραμικος (keramikos) oznaczającego działanie ognia. Obecnie jako ceramikę rozumie się wszystkie tworzywa/wyroby nieorganiczno-niemetaliczne, w trakcie otrzymywania których istotnym procesem jest obróbka cieplna np. spiekanie lub prażenie.

Keramiek is in feite een materiaal wat zowel geen metaal als polymeer is. Het kan worden omschreven als een materiaal wat wordt gevormd door verhitting (in bijvoorbeeld een oven) en soms ook druk, waarbij minimaal twee elementen aanwezig zijn. Eén ervan is non-metallisch en de ander mag zowel metallisch als niet-metallisch zijn.
