In the field of telecommunications, a telephone exchange or telephone switch is a system of electronic components that connects telephone calls. A central office is the physical building used to house inside plant equipment including telephone switches, which make phone calls "work" in the sense of making connections and relaying the speech information.

Central Office oder kurz CO ist eine aus dem Englischen entlehnte Bezeichnung für eine Vermittlungsstelle bzw. einen PoP. Die Bezeichnung CO wird häufig im DSL-Kontext verwendet. In einer solchen CO laufen Teilnehmeranschlussleitungen zusammen, die die Teilnehmer-Endeinrichtungen mit der Vermittlungsstelle verbinden. Dort werden sie je nach Auftrag, ins Telefonnetz und/oder auf einen DSLAM/DSL-AC geschaltet.

Een telefooncentrale is een installatie waarmee het mogelijk is telefoontoestellen zo te verbinden dat een gesprek mogelijk wordt. De telefooncentrale bevindt zich doorgaans op een centrale plek ten opzichte van de aangesloten toestellen. Telefooncentrales bestaan in verschillende groottes en functionaliteit: huiscentrale, bedrijfscentrale, lokale centrale, transit centrale, interconnectie centrale. Centrales kunnen analoog of digitaal zijn, en gebruikmaken van koper-, glasvezel- en/of radioverbindingen.
