The main forms of cauterization used today are electrocautery and chemical cautery. Cautery can also mean the branding of a human, either recreational or forced. Accidental burns can be considered cauterization as well.

La cautérisation est une technique médicale basée sur l’utilisation de la chaleur ou de produit chimique (comme le nitrate d'argent, l'acide chromique ou l'acide trichloracétique) pour détruire des cellules anormales (par exemple des cellules cancéreuses) ou obturer des vaisseaux sanguins (par exemple dans le cas de saignements de nez à répétition). Se fait généralement par application d'un fer chauffé à blanc sur la plaie, pour stopper l'hémorragie.

Bei der Kauterisation oder Kauterisierung (griech.) wird Gewebe durch den Kauter oder chemische Mittel (Ätzmittel) zerstört. Dadurch kann z. B. eine  Blutung gestoppt oder eine gutartige Wucherung entfernt werden. Neuerdings experimentieren amerikanische Militärärzte mit Kauterisierung in tiefereren Gewebsschichten durch starke Ultraschallwellen, um innere Blutungen ohne chirurgischen Eingriff vorübergehend zu stoppen.
