The cathode ray tube (CRT) is a vacuum tube containing an electron gun (a source of electrons) and a fluorescent screen used to view images. It has a means to accelerate and deflect the electron beam onto the fluorescent screen to create the images. The image may represent electrical waveforms (oscilloscope), pictures (television, computer monitor), radar targets and others. CRTs have also been used as memory devices, in which case the visible light emitted from the fluoresecent material (if any) is not intended to have significant meaning to a visual observer (though the visible pattern on the tube face may cryptically represent the stored data).

Die Kathodenstrahlröhre (engl. cathode ray tube, abgekürzt CRT) ist eine Elektronenröhre, die einen gebündelten Elektronenstrahl erzeugt.

Le tube cathodique (CRT ou Cathode Ray Tube en anglais), fut inventé par Karl Ferdinand Braun. Le dispositif est constitué d'un filament chauffé, de cathodes et d'anodes en forme de lentilles trouées qui soumises à une différence de potentiel (tension) créent un champ électrique accélérant les électrons. Ces derniers viennent frapper un des bords plats, l'écran, sur lequel on a déposé une couche fluorescente réagissant au choc des électrons en créant un point lumineux.

Katodstrålerör, benämns ofta CRT (eng. Cathode Ray Tube) när det används om datorskärmar, är den skärmteknik som under lång tid var standard för datorskärmar, övervakningsskärmar, TV-apparater Spektrumanalysator och oscilloskop, i dag nästan helt ersatt av LCD- och plasmateknik. Katodstråleröret uppfanns av Ferdinand Braun och namnet kommer ifrån katodstråle.

CRT (ang. Cathode-Ray Tube) to w języku angielskim oznaczenie kineskopu z działem elektronowym. W języku polskim pod tym słowem przyjęto potoczną nazwę skrótową, synonim dla wyrażenia: monitor CRT – czyli oznaczenie dla modeli monitorów komputerowych, których ekran oparty jest na kineskopie.
