Catecholamines are chemical compounds derived from the amino acid tyrosine containing catechol and amine groups. Some of them are biogenic amines. Catecholamines are water soluble and are 50 ound to plasma proteins, so they circulate in the bloodstream. The most abundant catecholamines are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and dopamine, all of which are produced by phenylalanine and tyrosine. Tyrosine is created from phenylalanine by hydroxylation thanks to the enzyme, phenylalanine hydroxylase (tyrosine is also ingested directly from dietary protein). Tyrosine is then sent to catecholamine secreting neurons. Here many kinds of reactions convert it to dopamine, to norepinephrine and epinephrine eventually. Catecholamines as hormones are released by the adrenal glands in situations of stress such as psychological stress or low blood sugar levels.

Katecholamine, auch Catecholamine oder Brenzcatechinamine, sind eine Klasse von körpereigenen und künstlichen Stoffen, die an den sympathischen Alpha- und Beta-Rezeptoren des Herz-Kreislaufsystems eine anregende Wirkung haben. Somit zählen die Katecholamine zu den Sympathomimetika. Die Katecholamine sind alle chemisch ähnlich aufgebaut (sie alle sind Derivate des 1,2-Dihydroxybenzols, englisch Catechol, ferner Phenylethylamine mit Catechol als ortho-Diphenolfunktion in 3,4-Position). Zu ihnen gehören beispielsweise Adrenalin und Noradrenalin.

Katecholaminy - organiczne związki chemiczne pochodne aminokwasu tyrozyny. Niektóre z nich to aminy biogenne. Katecholaminy są rozpuszczalne w wodzie i w 50% krążą we krwi związane z białkami osocza. W największej obfitości występują: epinefryna (adrenalina), norepinefryna (noradrenalina) i dopamina. Są one produkowane głównie przez rdzeń nadnerczy oraz pozazwojowe włókna układu sympatycznego. Adrenalina działa jak neurotransmiter w centralnym systemie nerwowym, a także jako hormon regulujący krążenie krwi. Noradrenalina jest głównie neurotransmiterem w obwodowej części układu sympatycznego, ale występuje również w krwi, dzięki zjawisku wyciekania z synaps. Ważną katecholaminą jest również izoprenalina, syntetyczna pochodna adrenaliny nie występująca w organizmie.
