A carpet is any loom-woven, felted textile or grass floor covering. The term was also used for table and wall coverings, as carpets were not commonly used on the floor in European interiors until the 18th century. The hand-knotted pile carpet probably originated in Central Asia between the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC. Carpet-making was introduced to Spain in 10th century by the Moors. The Crusades brought Turkish carpets to all of Europe, where they were primarily hung on walls or used on tables. Only with the opening of trade routes in the 17th century were significant numbers of Persian rugs introduced to Western Europe.

Teppiche sind meistens gemusterte Gewebe, die seit dem Altertum zum Bekleiden von Wänden (die späteren Tapeten) sowie zum Bedecken von Fußböden, Polstern usw. dienen. Diese vielseitige Verwendung finden die Teppiche gegenwärtig nur noch im Orient, während sie in Europa fast ausschließlich zum Bedecken von Fußböden benutzt werden.

Dywan widnieje na fladze Turkmenistanu. Słowo dywan, według językoznawcy Aleksandra Brücknera, pochodzi od tureckiego 'diwan' (rada, biuro), a to z kolei z języka perskiego, gdzie oznacza 'trybunał'.

Tapijt is een vloerbedekking die een bovenkant van textiel (bijvoorbeeld wol, kunstgaren, katoen of sisal) heeft. De onderkant is veelal gemaakt van jute of een kunststof drager.In het algemeen wordt onder 'tapijt' een vloerbedekking bedoeld die kamerbreed is (van muur tot muur). Als echter over 'een tapijt' wordt gesproken van ongeveer voor 1900, dan wordt meestal een los kleed bedoeld. De term 'vloerkleed' kan zowel een los kleed als een tapijt betekenen. Een losliggend vloerkleed wordt ook karpet genoemd.

Alfombra es el término con que se designa a cualquier tejido confeccionado en un telar en lana, hilo o fibra y utilizada para cubrir el suelo de una estancia. La alfombra de nudos tejida a mano tuvo su origen, con toda probabilidad, en Mongolia o Turkestán entre los siglos IV y II AdC, siendo introducida en España por los árabes en el siglo X. Las Cruzadas introdujeron las alfombras turcas en Europa donde eran, principalmente, colgadas de las paredes como tapices o utilizadas sobre las mesas. Solamente tras la apertura de las rutas comerciales en el siglo XVII llegaron las alfombras persas. Su uso en los hogares occidentales como cubierta para suelos no se hizo popular hasta el siglo XVIII.
