Carnival
This article describes the festival season. In North America, carnival also refers to a funfair. For other uses, see Carnival (disambiguation). Carnival or Carnivale is a festival season. It occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February or March. It typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.

This article is about the song by Natalie Merchant. For the The Cardigans song, see Carnival (The Cardigans song). "Carnival" is a 1995 song written and produced by singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant and was the debut single from her debut album Tigerlily.The single was released to U.S. airwaves in the summer of 1995 and went straight to the number ten spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The single received a radio edit cutting the song down from the six-minute LP version.In the song, Merchant likened the many colourful sights and sounds of day-to-day life in New York City to a carnival.

Carnival! was a 1961 Tony-award winning Broadway musical with book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Bob Merrill, starring Anna Maria AlberghettiJames MitchellKaye Ballard, Pierre Olaf, and Jerry Orbach (making his Broadway debut). Gower Champion both directed and choreographed. The musical was based on the film Lili (1953).
