A caricature is either a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness, or in literature, a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.Caricatures can be insulting or complimentary and can serve a political purpose or be drawn solely for entertainment. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines.The term is derived from the Italian caricare- to charge or load. An early definition occurs in the English doctor Sir Thomas Browne's Christian Morals (first pub.1716).

Karykatura (wł. caricatura) to przedstawienie osoby, wydarzenia lub przedmiotu, które cechuje się przesadą w oddaniu charakterystycznych elementów, właściwości, cech. Karykatura uwydatnia te cechy zwykle w celu ośmieszenia danej osoby, zjawiska itd.Terminem tym określa się także dzieło zawierające właśnie takie przedstawienie. Często jest to rysunek (zazwyczaj portret), rzadziej rzeźba (np. karykatury autorstwa Józefa Gosławskiego). Także forma literacka, gdzie sposób przedstawienia postaci literackiej, polega na wyolbrzymieniu i pełnym przesady wyjaskrawieniu pewnych cech jej wyglądu zewnętrznego lub postawy wobec życia, mający na celu ośmieszającą charakterystykę. Karykatura jest jednym z uprzywilejowanych instrumentów satyry.

Per caricatura si intende un disegno di solito a carattere umoristico o satirico che rappresenta una persona. Il disegno della caricatura, solitamente molto semplice ed essenziale, storpia volutamente l'immagine della persona rappresentata, caricandone (da qui il termine) alcuni tratti caratteristici della fisionomia. Solitamente il particolare esagerato ha già in sé un contenuto sarcastico, come le orecchie enormi, o il naso pronunciato. Le caricature possono essere corredate da scritte o da fumetti, diventando così fumetti che assumono un tono evidentemente canzonatorio o satirico.
