In organic chemistry, a carbonyl group is a functional group composed of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom : C=O. The term carbonyl can also refer to carbon monoxide as a ligand in an inorganic or organometallic complex (a metal carbonyl, e.g. nickel carbonyl); in this situation, carbon is triple-bonded to oxygen : C≡O. The remainder of this article concerns itself with the organic chemistry definition of carbonyl.

Die Carbonylgruppe, auch CO-Gruppe, ist Bestandteil vieler organisch-chemischer Verbindungen. Sie ist gekennzeichnet durch ein Kohlenstoffatom (Carbonylkohlenstoff), das ein doppelt gebundenes Sauerstoffatom (Carbonylsauerstoff) trägt. Zapisywana często skrótowo jako =CO, lub >C=O.W aldehydach wiąże się na końcu łańcucha węglowego za pomocą pojedynczego wiązania (C-C); do drugiego wolnego wiązania przyłączony zostaje wodór. Een carbonylgroep is een functionele groep die bestaat uit een koolstofatoom dat met een dubbele binding covalent gebonden is aan een zuurstofatoom. Het koolstofatoom uit de carbonylgroep zit met twee enkelvoudige bindingen verbonden aan de rest van het molecuul.Indien de carbonylgroep is geplaatst tussen een waterstofatoom en een koolstofatoom, noemt men de combinatie een aldehyde. Als de carbonylgroep is geplaatst tussen twee koolstofatomen spreekt men over een keton. De carbonylgroep maakt naast deze twee voorbeelden deel uit van verschillende andere functionele groepen, zoals carbonzuur, ester en amide.
