Carbon (IPA: ) is a chemical element that has the symbol C and atomic number 6. An abundant nonmetallic, tetravalent element, carbon has several allotropic forms.The abundance of carbon in the universe, along with the unusual polymer-forming ability of carbon-based compounds at the common temperatures encountered on Earth, make this element the basis of the chemistry of all known life.The name "carbon" comes from Latin language carbo, coal. In some Romance languages, the word can refer both to the element and to coal.

Kohlenstoff (von altgerm. kolo = „Kohle“), Symbol C (von lat. carbo „Holzkohle“, latinisiert carbonium) ist ein chemisches Element der 4. Hauptgruppe. Es kommt in der Natur sowohl in reiner (gediegener) Form als auch chemisch gebunden vor. Aufgrund seiner besonderen Elektronenkonfiguration (halbgefüllte L-Schale) besitzt es die Fähigkeit zur Bildung von komplexen Molekülen und weist von allen chemischen Elementen die größte Vielfalt an chemischen Verbindungen auf. Kohlenstoffverbindungen bilden die molekulare Grundlage allen irdischen Lebens.

Ważnym niestabilnym izotopem jest 14C (radiowęgiel) powstający z ¹⁴N w górnych warstwach atmosfery, pod wpływem promieniowania kosmicznego. Il carbonio è l'elemento chimico della tavola periodica degli elementi che ha come simbolo C e come numero atomico 6. È un elemento non metallico, tetravalente. L'atomo di carbonio nei composti con altri elementi o con sé stesso puó presentarsi in una delle tre note forme di ibridizzazione (secondo la teoria degli orbitali atomici LCAO): sp³,sp² ed sp rispettivamente. Con esse il carbonio è in grado di coordinare rispettivamente altri 4,3 e 2 atomi con angoli di legame approssimativamente di 109° , 120° e 180°. A seconda poi della simmetria delle autofunzioni molecolari complessive delle coppie di atomi che partecipano al legame, si avranno legami singoli, doppi o tripli.
