Cancer is a group of diseases in which cells are aggressive (grow and divide without respect to normal limits), invasive (invade and destroy adjacent tissues), and/or metastatic (spread to other locations in the body). These three malignant properties of cancers differentiate them from benign tumors, which are self-limited in their growth and do not invade or metastasize (although some benign tumor types are capable of becoming malignant). Cancer may affect people at all ages, even fetuses, but risk for the more common varieties tends to increase with age. Cancer causes about 13% of all deaths. Apart from people, forms of cancer may affect animals and plants.

Le cancer est une maladie caractérisée par une prolifération cellulaire anormale et anomique au sein d'un tissu normal de l'organisme. Ces cellules dérivent toutes d'un même clone, cellule initiatrice du cancer qui a acquis certaines caractéristiques lui permettant de se diviser indéfiniment. Au cours de l'évolution de la maladie, certaines cellules peuvent migrer de leur lieu de production et former des métastases.

Krebs bezeichnet in der Medizin einen malignen (bösartigen) Tumor - eine bösartige Neoplasie. Im engeren Sinn sind die malignen epithelialen Tumoren (Karzinome) und die malignen mesenchymalen Tumoren (Sarkome) gemeint. Umgangssprachlich werden auch die bösartigen Hämoblastosen als Krebs, wie z. B. Leukämie als „Blutkrebs“ bezeichnet.

Nowotwór złośliwy (łac. neoplasma malignum) - nowotwór o małym zróżnicowaniu tkanek, za to o skłonności do odrywania się komórek. Komórki nowotworów złośliwych nie trzymają się miejsca, w którym powstały. Potrafią oderwać się od rosnącego guza, dotrzeć do naczyń krwionośnych i zawędrować wraz z krwią w odległe miejsce organizmu, gdzie dają początek nowemu guzowi. W przypadku choroby nowotworowej powstanie nowych guzów, tzw. przerzutów, może doprowadzić do śmierci.
