Cachexia (; from Greek κακός kakos "bad" and ἕξις hexis "condition") or wasting syndrome is loss of weight, muscle atrophy, fatigue, weakness, and significant loss of appetite in someone who is not actively trying to lose weight. The formal definition of cachexia is the loss of body mass that cannot be reversed nutritionally: Even if the affected patient eats more calories, lean body mass will be lost, indicating there is a fundamental pathology in place.

Unter Kachexie - als Kofferwort aus dem griechischen κακαξ = kakos = „schlecht“ und 'ηξiσ = hexis = „Zustand“ - versteht man eine krankhafte, sehr starke Abmagerung. Der Medizinische Dienst der Krankenversicherung (MDK) versteht unter Kachexie einen Body-Mass-Index von unter 18. In der von der Sozialmedizinischen Expertengruppe herausgegebenen Kodierempfehlung Nr. 16 definiert der MDK eine Kachexie mit einem BMI unter 18,5 kg/m².

La cachexie est un affaiblissement profond de l’organisme (perte de poids, atrophie musculaire, etc.), lié à une dénutrition très importante. La cachexie n'est pas une maladie en elle-même, mais le symptôme d'une autre. Elle peut provenir d'une anorexie (même chez une personne dont la perte de poids n'est pas volontaire), d'un cancer (cachexie cancéreuse, produite par des substances secrétées par la tumeur, les cachexines), de maladies chroniques ( BPCO, insuffisance cardiaque, insuffisance hépatique, insuffisance rénale), voire de certaines maladies infectieuses (par exemple la tuberculose et le SIDA, ou certaines maladies auto-immunes).

Kakeksi, cachexia (kommer från grekiska kakos dåligt + hexis tillstånd), betyder mycket försämrat allmäntillstånd exempelvis avmagring, viktminskning och trötthet hos en person som inte aktivt försöker förlora vikt. Det kan vara ett tecken på ett flertal underliggande sjukdomar, exempelvis cancer, tuberkulos, AIDS, japansk encefalit och vissa autoimmuna sjukdomar. Det kan även vara ett tecken på missbruk av droger såsom amfetamin eller kokain.
