In computer science a byte (pronounced ) is a unit of measurement of information storage, most often consisting of eight bits. In many computer architectures it is a unit of memory addressing.Originally, a byte was a small group of bits of a size convenient for data such as a single character from a Western character set. Its size was generally determined by the number of possible characters in the supported character set and was chosen to be a submultiple of the computer's word size; historically, bytes have ranged from five to twelve bits. The popularity of IBM's System/360 architecture starting in the 1960s and the explosion of microcomputers based on 8-bit microprocessors in the 1980s has made eight bits by far the most common size for a byte. The term octet is widely used as a more precise synonym where ambiguity is undesirable (for example, in protocol definitions).

Byte magazine was an influential microcomputer magazine in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, because of its wide-ranging editorial coverage. Whereas many magazines from the mid-1980s had been dedicated to the Wintel platform or the Mac, mostly from a business user's perspective, Byte covered developments in the entire field of "small computers and software", and sometimes included in-depth features on other computing fields as well, such as supercomputers and high-reliability computing.

Bajt (ang. byte - kęs) - najmniejsza adresowalna jednostka informacji pamięci komputerowej, składająca się z bitów.W praktyce przyjmuje się, że jeden bajt to 8 bitów, choć to nie wynika z powyższej definicji. Aby uniknąć niejednoznaczności, jednostka składająca się z ośmiu bitów zwana jest również oktetem. Bywa też że "bajt" definiuje się jako 8 bitów, najmniejszą adresowalną jednostkę pamięci nazywając znakiem.W pierwszych komputerach bajt mógł mieć również 4, 6, 7, 9 czy 12 bitów. Ośmiobitowy bajt po raz pierwszy pojawił się pod koniec 1956 roku, a został rozpowszechniony i uznany za standard w 1964 r. po tym jak  IBM wprowadził System/360. W starszych maszynach nie stosowano pojęcia bajt ani oktet, najmniejszą jednostką było słowo maszynowe (np. 24-bitowe w maszynach standardu ICL, jak polskie "Odry", albo 60-bitowe w maszynach CDC czy 36-bitowe w Honeywell). W Odrach serii 1300 rozkazy działające na znakach adresowały pojedynczy znak używając specjalnego dla nich trybu adresowania (dodatkowych 2 bitów adresu znaku w słowie).

Un byte (interpretato come contrazione di binary term, elemento binario, ma di etimologia incerta, o forse meglio binary octecte) è una sequenza di bit, il cui numero dipende dall'implementazione fisica della macchina sottostante. Per convenzione negli ultimi anni lo si intende formato da 8 bit, ed è pertanto in grado di assumere 28 = 256 possibili valori. Gli informatici di lingua francese utilizzano il più preciso termine octet (ovvero ottetto): distinzione utile soprattutto quando erano ancora diffusi computer con byte di dimensione diversa.
