A burnous (also spelled burnoose, or bournous; from the Berber and Maghribi Arab. burnus) is a long cloak of coarse woollen fabric with a hood, usually white in color, worn by Berbers and the Arabs throughout North Africa.It became a distinctive part of the uniform of the French colonial army's Spahi soldiers. It was also sometimes worn unofficially by officers or soldiers of other units in North Africa. The burnous remains part of the uniform of the one remaining Spahi regiment of the French Army, the 1st Spahi Regiment.

Le burnous ou bournous, barnous en arabe , aâlaw en chaoui et avidhi en kabyle, est un manteau en laine long avec une capuche pointu et sans manche. Il fait partie du costume traditionnel tunisien et était également porté par les spahis.

Ein Burnus hat meist keine Ärmel und wird vorn offen getragen.Der Burnus wird von Männern über dem Unterzeug getragen. Seit dem napoleonischen Ägyptenfeldzug und der französischen Eroberung Algeriens 1830 lässt sich eine Entlehnung des Wortes in die europäischen Sprachen nachweisen.Besonders in Oberösterreich wird das Wort auch heute noch als Bezeichnung für Mäntel und Jacken gebraucht.

Il Burnus (parola berbera e dei dialetti arabi del Nordafrica) è l'ampio mantello con cappuccio di lana, perlopiù bianco, che costituisce l'elemento più tipico dell'abbigliamento maschile nell'Africa del Nord. Il nome deriva dal latino byrrus (o birrus), che designava appunto un ampio mantello da portare sopra gli abiti. Oltre a berb. abernus (e ar. bernus), diffusi soprattutto in Algeria e nelle regioni più orientali, in Marocco ed altrove sono usati anche altri termini: aselham, aheddun, azennar, akhnif, akhidus, ecc.
